Winter Bird Bath & Fountain Prep
Freezing temperatures can be detrimental to bird bath and fountain bowls! Be sure to prepare them for the freezing weather before its too late. For the lighter weighted birdbath and fountain bowls, take them off of the pedestals and flip them over on the pedestal to keep water from collecting inside and freezing. You can also lean the bowls against the pedestal or a wall if needed. As long as there is not standing water left within the bowl to freeze and expand. The expansion of the ice can potentially crack your bird bath or fountain bowl!
For the heavier weighted bird bath and fountain bowls, clear all of the water from the bowl and cover the entire bird bath or fountain. You can use a tarp or drop cloth to cover them. Make sure the tarp is tight so the weight of water or snow doesn't push the tarp into the bowl and defeat the purpose of covering it. Some people have used a piece of ply-board to cover the bowl of their bird baths, this is ok to do as well.
For those of you who want to keep a fountain or bird bath going year round...
We have bird bath heaters!
These heaters will work in any bird bath or small fountain, and keep the water temperature from freezing all winter!
Birds need water every day, especially when all the water is frozen. They will get it from snow or food such as insects and wild fruits, but they appreciate open, available water. When ponds and streams have frozen, they will seek it out wherever it is available. A bird bath heater will do wonders for the birds in your yard! Also its a great opportunity for backyard bird watchers.
